Quality vintage chronograph
Superb reverse panda dial
Near mint condition
City is the somewhat strange brand name chosen by Swedish importers of Swiss watches in the sixties and seventies. This chronograph is in very nice condition, having an impeccable dial with applied hour markers and nice large silver subdials. A vintage divers-/drivers-/yachting toolwatch for sports use. The colored 5-minute sectors is an indication of a seventies chronograph, many of the earlier ones more usually having 3 minute “telephone” periods on the right hand subdial. These 5 minute sectors are the reason for it to be classified as a yacht timer too, as there are 5 minute countdown periods to time before crossing the starting line. The inside tachymeter scale is for measuring units per hour and was typically the method applied for determining average speed on motorways with mile- or kilometer posts. Under ultra violet light, the zero point on the bezel, all three hands, the hour markers and the right subdial shows intact lume.
The external 60-minute diving bezel does not click and is bidirectional. Together with “Water Resistant 10ATM” stamped on the back and the bidirectional bezel, the date for this watch is probably quite close to 1973. This being the year Aquastar patented the unidirectional clickable bezel and the watch industry decided that “Waterproof” was a bit much to promise.
The unpolished discretely cushion shaped stainless steel case is in good order too. Case dimensions are 39 x 43,5 x 13,7 mm, lug width is 19 mm. The beautiful Valjoux 7734 movement works perfectly, running within +/- 15 seconds per day, maintaining more than 200 in amplitude even when the chronograph is engaged and over 250 when not. Because we have not seen any need to service it, the price is in our opinion very attractive for the collector buying this rare “all inclusive” vintage chronograph.
