Rare opportunity

From ca 1977, this Heuer is among the automatic, caliber 12 chronographs that you don´t see very often. In the catalogues it is aimed for the “active skier”, no less! The Italian mountain village Cortina (Cortina d’Ampezzo is a ski resort in northern Italy. It’s part of the Dolomiti Superski area, which encompasses the Falzarego Pass, with its downhill runs. Sites from the 1956 Winter Games held in Cortina include the Ice Stadium, the Eugenio Monti bobsleigh run and the disused ski jump Trampolino Olimpico Italia) hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and will again next year (2026).

Heuer was struggling, as the rest of the Swiss watch industry when this watch was produced. Therefore the number made was very restricted, and the use of the caliber 12 movement was probably caused by an elevated stock situation. Most chronographs in 1977 were of “the electric kind” not forgetting that Seiko and Citizen also had an increasing market share for their models. Anyway, well kept Heuers are always appreciated for their heritage, quality and relative scarceness. This Cortina does not have the Heuer signed bracelet, but sports one that sits perfectly on the wrist and has many extra links for adjustments of length.
